WHO WE ARE
The Sheet Metal Workers Apprenticeship & Training Center at 813 Airport Blvd in Austin, Texas opened in 2005 to serve Local Union 67 signatory contractors and its members in the Austin and Waco areas. Membership in the Austin has grown expeditiously over the past decade or more. The Training Center is overseen by a Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) made up of 3 labor representatives and 3 contractor representatives. The Training Center is primarily funded by Local 67 signatory contractors and Local 67 members. It also receives federal funding allocated by the Texas Workforce Association and other grants that assist in providing tuition-free education to apprentices and other Local 67 members.
PROGRAM INFORMATION
Applicants must possess and present a high school diploma or GED, driver’s license or Government-issued photo ID, Social Security card, and a birth certificate or a US passport. Selective Service registration is also required.
Reliable transportation is a must throughout the apprenticeship program. An OSHA 10 card and a clean background are recommended but not required for application. Applicants must be able to lift 25+pounds and safely perform sheet metal fabrication, installation, and other construction-related work. It is imperative that apprentices attend all classes as scheduled, obtain good work evaluations, report to job sites on time, and follow all federal, state, school and contractor policies and guidelines.
There is zero tolerance for illicit drugs and/or controlled substances. Pre-employment and random drug testing is common in the industry and among the program’s employing contractors. The zero tolerance policy is also enforced at the Training Center during class hours or otherwise.
The apprenticeship program also maintains a zero tolerance policy for harassment and/or discrimination. Program administrators, instructors, and other staff promote equality in the trade and in the classroom and disapprove of bullying, adverse comments or speech, and/or any intentional or unintentional display of hate related to race, sex, or sexual preference.

COURSE OUTLINE
The apprenticeship program is four years in length. Apprentices start each class year in early September. Classes are two nights per week, four hours per night through spring. After four years, apprentices graduate to become highly-paid journeypersons in their chosen career pathway. 1st YEAR APPRENTICE CURRICULUM
Introduction to Sheet Metal Trade (CORE 1):
Includes the use of HVAC calculators, construction math, hand tools, machinery, drafting materials, metals, shop equipment, and hangars and supports. Additional curriculum supports construction/job site safety, duct fittings, layout, trade history, the collective bargaining agreement, the union’s constitution, the program’s Code of Excellence, time and money management, good study habits, communication skills, anti-harassment, diversity, workplace housekeeping, work planning, introduction to sheet metal career pathways, and best practices for sheet metal workers.
2nd YEAR APPRENTICE CURRICULUM
Intermediate Sheet Metal (CORE 2):
Includes basic plans and specifications, basic field layout, intermediate drafting, intermediate duct fittings, intermediate sheet metal math, importance of quality, safety, and cost effectiveness, infectious control awareness, and fire and smoke dampers.
3rd YEAR APPRENTICE CURRICULUM
Sheet Metal (CORE 3) includes the following:
- OSHA 30
- Introduction to Detailing/AutoCAD
- Introduction to Welding
- Introduction to HVAC
- Introduction to Air Balance
4th YEAR APPRENTICE CURRICULUM
Sheet Metal Career Pathway Options:
- Pathway A: HVAC Fabricator/Installer/Service
- Pathway B: Certified Industrial Welding
- Pathway C: Air Balance (TABB)

JATC LEADERSHIP
The Sheet Metal Worker’s Local Union 67 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) of the Austin Area maintains vested authority over the Austin Training Center and the registered apprenticeship program in conformity with the national guideline standards set forth by the Department of Labor and recommended by the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal Industry.
